William Grant Still Exhibition
Review of Sahdji
Review of the world premiere of William Grant Still's choral ballet Sahdji
from Musical America June 1931. According to this review the
performance was well received by audience and critic. In a letter to Alain
Locke, with whom the idea of Sahdji originated, Still states that he
hopes that Richard Bruce, the author of the scenario, and Locke can be present
for the performance. Still also mentions that on the same program there will
be a one-act opera by a "very talented contemporary composer." In this letter
Still does not name the opera or the composer, but the review of this
performance provides them.
