Field: contains:   allows you to locate words in the photograph title or to locate outdoor advertisements by year, company, city, etc. (see pull-down menu under All). After entering the word(s) you would like to search for, you can limit your search by selecting a term from the pull-down menu, or you may search for the word(s) in the entire database by accepting the default "All" for a complete list of available fields.

Illustration & Special Features:   pre-set searches are available that will help you to find photographs that show people, in addition to signs, buildings, etc. Unlike most of the other categories, there is only one option in the Illustrations and Special Features area of the search page. All images in the R. C. Maxwell Company Outdoor Advertising category are black and white photographs. People are shown mainly in large groups or from a distance, so no other distinguishing features have been indexed. The outdoor advertising signs are the primary focus of the photographs in this category.

Categories:   identifies the category you are searching in the database. A description of all the categories that make up the EAA project, including the number of ads each contains, is available on the Browse Categories page.

Example searches

• To search for all R. C. Maxwell Company Outdoor Advertising advertisements containing Coca-Cola advertisements created during the 1920s,
  1. Choose Company in the first Field:.
  2. Type Coca-Cola in the first contains box.
  3. Choose Date in the second Field:.
  4. Type 192* in the first contains box. (Note that the '*' means that you'll accept any year in the 1920s. If you'd like to search within only one year, just enter that specific date - 1922.)
  5. Click the Search button in the right side table, and
  6. Wait for the results!
  
  
• To search for outdoor advertisements for Bliss Native Herbs in New Jersey (NJ) with people in the photograph,
  1. Choose Company from the first Field menu.
  2. Type Bliss Native Herbs in the second contains box.
  3. Choose State from the second Field menu.
  4. Type NJ in the second contains box.
     Note that state names are abbreviated to the 2 letter Postal Code abbreviation. A complete list of the nine states included in the R. C. Maxwell Company database is available.
  5. Choose People in Photograph from the Illustrations and Special Features menu.
  6. Click the the Search button, and
  7. Wait for the results!
