Vernon L. Smith is an economist and faculty member at the University
of Arizona.

Collection Overview
The 1996 accession (1996-0106) (21,375 items, ca.
1954-1987) contains correspondence, research files, and other papers related to Vernon L. Smith's career and research interests, some of
which include experimental economics, the methodology of economics, game
theory, and investment and production theories. Some materials also concern
Smith's work for the National Science Foundation and the Energy Information
Administration, a federal office.
The 2000 addition (2000-0416) (20,398 items; dated ca. 1950-1995) includes notes, files,
drafts, typescripts, and reprints of or related to Smith's papers and articles;
course materials; other economists' papers; and professional and personal
correspondence. Topics include experimental economics, the electrical-power
industry, auction markets, radio spectrum auctions, water rights, and game
theory. The collection also includes materials relating to two proposals Smith
made to the National Science Foundation in the 1980s, as well as four
electronic computer files and one color photograph.
The 2001 addition (2001-0168) (6716 items, 10.20 linear feet, 1966-1999 and undated (bulk
1986-1994)) comprises research notes, experiment data, documentation, and
drafts of writings by Smith on topics such as auctions and bidding behavior,
electric and gas price markets and power networks, power utility deregulation,
gas transmission, fairness in markets, and the stock market. Forty-one
electronic documents of some of the experiment data are contained on a computer
diskette. Also included are papers and articles by other economists and a file
of confidential informal ballots for membership in the Economic Sciences
section of the National Academy of Sciences.
The 2004 addition (04-004) (2 items, .10 linear feet; dated December 29, 2003) comprises electronic files (MSWord and PDF formats) containing Smith, Vernon L.,
"History of Experimental Economic Science in the University of Arizona."
The files have been migrated to the Special Collections server.
The 2008 addition (08-001) (28,350 items; 37.8 lin. ft.; dated 1949-2006 (bulk 1985-2001)) consists of experiment data, research notes, drafts of articles (1986-2000), grant proposals, correspondence and teaching materials.
