Background

Scope and content:

Collection consists of letters to Young from prospective contributors to The Male Muse, including W.H. Auden, William Barber, Victor Borsa, Bruce Boone, Jim Eggeling, Allen Ginsberg, and others. The letters discuss potential poems, sometimes including drafts or samples, for publication in the anthology. Many of the poems included with the letters are erotic. The letters also discuss publication rights, gay literature, and life as gay male poets, and a few of them include the poets' biographical information. Several correspondents decline to have their work published in the anthology and cite the difficulties and risks that they believed would accompany being publicly known as gay men.

Also included in the collection is a published copy of The Male Muse.
