Library Technical Services Field Experience (Unpaid)

 

The Metadata and Discovery Strategy (MADS) Department in the Technical Services Division of Duke University Libraries (DUL) has a field experience opportunity (unpaid) for a library school student interested in gaining experience in library technical services procedures.   

We are looking for an individual to assist in organizing and executing data remediation projects to facilitate our migration from our current integrated library system, Aleph, to our presumed next system, FOLIO. Under the guidance of the Metadata Transformation Librarian the individual will help to create an organizational structure and prioritization for existing remediation projects, and assist in the execution of projects when appropriate.

Requirements: Current enrollment in an MLS program accredited by the American Library Association or equivalent.

Time frame:  2022 Spring semester

Hours:   Flexible, during normal business hours (8am-5pm)

Location: Metadata and Discovery Strategy Department, Smith Warehouse Bay 9 / Or hybrid on-campus and remote work

Responsibilities:

  • Working in close collaboration with the MADS Department, create organization for migration related data remediation tasks.
  • Participate in MADS department meetings
  • Create and update documentation related to migration tasks

Skills Gained:

  • Student will gain significant experience and understanding in the migration of library systems
  • Student will gain significant project management experience
  • Student will develop experience organizing documents to optimize project completion goals
  • Student will gain experience working with a variety of technologies for organizing tasks and data, e.g. PostgreSQL, Trello, MarcEdit, etc.
