Responsibilities

  • Using inclusive description practices, provides original cataloging of monographs in all formats, subjects, and languages for which there is competence, with an emphasis on non-textual resource types.  Performs related research as necessary to assign descriptive and subject access points and to contribute new and enhanced records within established guidelines.
  • Contributes to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, including NACO, SACO, and BIBCO.  This includes entity management through creation and enhancement of authority records and recommending new and changed Library of Congress Subject Headings, and authenticating bibliographic records to national standards.  Performs related research as necessary.
  • Designs, implements, and manages workflows for assigned resource types; provides consultation or performs liaison duties to help solve technical problems, interacts collaboratively on or leads projects, and exchanges information with library staff within and outside of the Resource Description department.
  • Actively participates in strategic planning relating to discovery, access, retrieval, and management of objects in the library services platform (LSP), discovery, and digital repository systems.
  • Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.

Qualifications

Education:

Required:  MLS Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.

 

Experience:

Required: Minimum 3 years experience performing original cataloging; experience cataloging a non-print format (in order of preference: scores, sound recordings, physical or streaming moving images, electronic resources); demonstrated ability to apply the following cataloging tools: Resource Description and Access (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), a standard classification scheme, and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority records; reading knowledge of one language other than English; evidence of analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills; excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; ability to work collegially and collaboratively within and across organizations.

 

Preferred:  Working knowledge of OCLC Connexion and the ExLibris Alma LSP; reading knowledge of one of the following languages in order of preference: Russian, Turkish, Arabic, Korean, or Hebrew; experience contributing to Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) programs; experience with Library of Congress Classification; familiarity with music resources; experience contributing to or leading short and long-term projects.

Working Conditions

  • Frequently works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Routinely moves library materials weighing up to 20 pounds

Salary and Benefits

We are committed to transparency and fairness in our hiring practice. The hiring range for this position is firm at $57,222 - $82,400.  Offers will reflect the candidate’s years of experience, rank at appointment, and internal equity.
