At Duke, we celebrate individuality and value diverse perspectives. The University Archives Intern for Student Engagement plays a vital role in helping collect and document student life on campus.

As part of the Rubenstein Library's University Archives (UA), you'll help expand student representation in University Archives and engage directly with student communities.

 

What You'll Do

- Report to and assist the Assistant University Archivist with outreach to student groups.

- Support workshops, social media posts, blog content, exhibits, and other outreach to educate students on UA’s student-collecting initiative.

- Answer reference questions from students, faculty/staff, alums, and non-Duke affiliated researchers related to undergraduate and graduate student groups, Greek life, athletics, and other types of student-led activities.

- Assist the Assistant University Archivist in primary source instruction related to Duke history.

- Occasionally work in the Rubenstein Reading Room.

- May work occasional evenings.

- Routinely move library materials weighing up to 40 pounds.

- Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

 

What You'll Bring

- Current enrollment or recent graduation from a master’s program in archival studies, public history, or library/information science.

- Interest in institutional archives, outreach, and collaborative projects.

- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

- Project and time-management skills; strong organizational skills.

- Commitment to outstanding customer service and inclusive culture.

- Preferred: Experience in special collections or archival theory coursework.
