One of the best ways to come to know a place is through the rituals, customs, and values of its food culture. Our semester-long exploration sought to understand how Southerners negotiate identity and change through food—from the smallest home kitchen to the largest statewide program. Exploring in local and national archives, we uncovered three interconnected themes: stories of food justice and inequality; the overlooked labor and domestic knowledge of women; and an entrepreneurial spirit rooted in community. We invite you to discover how the simple act of eating connects us to larger histories of power and resilience in the American South.
