Bull City Bites: Welcome to Durham
Writing 120: We Are What We Eat
What can food tell us about a city's identity? In this student-curated exhibit, first-year writing students explore Durham's food culture through archival research, tracing the stories that emerge when we look closely at what a community eats, where it eats, and who gets a seat at the table.
These projects examine the rise of Asian cuisine in Durham, the design and politics behind Duke's new dining hall, the persistence of diet culture on campus, how restaurant menus reveal shifts in Durham's racial and urban makeup, and the evolution of 9th Street's food scene as documented in the campus magazine The Bite. Together, they show how something as ordinary as a meal can illuminate questions of belonging, access, and change, both on campus and across the Bull City.
