Originally established as The Walking Club in 1924, the Explorers’ Club aimed to foster connections with nature through leisurely walks and outings across North Carolina's landscapes. Despite a stop during World War II, the spirit of outdoor adventure persisted, culminating in the launch of Project WILD in 1974. This innovative pre-orientation program offers incoming freshmen immersive experiences in western North Carolina, blending wilderness exploration with leadership training and environmental education. From its humble beginnings to its modern-day initiatives, Duke's outdoor clubs continue to shape student experiences, promoting a deep appreciation for nature and fostering lifelong connections.
