Discover Duke University's enduring commitment to outdoor exploration through this exhibit, tracing the trajectory from the early days of The Explorers’ Club in 1930 to the contemporary initiatives of Project WILD today. Originally established as The Walking Club in 1924, the Explorers’ Club aimed to foster connections with nature through leisurely walks and outings across North Carolina's landscapes. Despite a stop during World War II, the spirit of outdoor adventure persisted, culminating in the launch of Project WILD in 1974. This innovative pre-orientation program offers incoming freshmen immersive experiences in western North Carolina, blending wilderness exploration with leadership training and environmental education. From its humble beginnings to its modern-day initiatives, Duke's outdoor clubs continue to shape student experiences, promoting a deep appreciation for nature and fostering lifelong connections.
