How did the political upheavals of the American Revolution find their way into the ordinary records of daily life? How did a vision of government guided by the common people and by common sense come to feel, at last, not extraordinary but commonplace?

People from this period kept track of memorable quotations and useful facts by recording them in personal notebooks known as “commonplace books.” This exhibit features three commonplace books where the owners copied down revolutionary events or texts.

Exhibit curated by Tye Landels, Ph.D., Global 1776 Exhibit Intern.

Display featuring two handwritten manuscripts, a book, and one facsimile of a handwritten manuscript, accompanied by labels.
