Poetry is one of the most powerful forms of expression, capable of reaching beyond words to touch the heart. It gives voice to emotion, memory, and shared experience in a way few other art forms can. National Poetry Month, established in April 1996 by the Academy of American Poets, was created to honor this power—to celebrate poets and their lasting contributions to literature, and to foster a sense of connection and community among readers and writers alike.
In the spirit of National Poetry Month, I wanted to highlight poets with meaningful ties to North Carolina whose work embodies the emotional depth of poetry. The poems selected speak to strength found in community, understanding discovered within oneself, and the vital connection between the two. During this month of reflection and celebration, I encourage you to take a moment to read a poem and, if it moves you, share it with someone else.
