Are you interested in open educational resources (OER) and student success in a higher education setting? Do you want to explore how academic librarians and libraries can support breaking down cost barriers to a college education? Join the Duke Libraries for this practicum!
The Libraries will be conducting a survey of Duke teaching faculty to learn about their attitudes toward and uses of open educational resources (OER): teaching and learning materials such as textbooks, practice questions, videos, tutorials, or even code specifically designed for higher education coursework but freely available online at no cost to students.
The practicum student will participate in designing and distributing the survey, as well as analyzing quantitative and qualitative (faculty comments) results. They will get experience in conducting focus groups and writing a report—in collaboration with the Librarian for Education and Open Scholarship—of findings. Open education and OER are hot topics in equity at the university level, and you’ll be working closely with experienced library staff, survey and data analysis tools, and learning about college-level teaching and learning. Hybrid work can be negotiated.
This is an unpaid practicum. Work with your ILS program to receive academic credit, if possible!
Desired qualities: Interest in open educational practices, course costs, surveys and data analysis.
Desire to work in an academic library setting, attention to detail, strong written communication skills. Experience with Tableau and Qualtrics is a bonus, but not required; part of the experience is to learn to use them.
To apply: Please email a letter of interest and a resumé by November 22, 2023 to Haley Walton, haley.walton@duke.edu, Librarian for Education and Open Scholarship at Duke University Libraries.
