Checklist of Works Published by Stuart Wright and Palaemon Press Limited
Editor, publisher, and translator Stuart Wright founded the Palaemon Press Limited in Winston Salem, North Carolina, in 1977. The press published books, pamphlets and broadsides, primarily by Southern authors, and in most cases offering the first printing or first separate appearance of the work (as noted in this check list). Authors published by the press include A. R. Ammons, Fred Chappell, James Dickey, Richard Eberhart, George Garrett, Reynolds Price, W. D. Snodgrass, William Styron, John Updike, Richard Penn Warren, Eudora Welty and Richard Wilbur. Most of the press' offerings were limited editions, but in the later years it published trade editions as well. Palaemon Press published its last works in 1985. Wright also published works under his own name.
Stuart Wright (1948-) was born in Roxboro, North Carolina. He graduated from Wake Forest University (WFU) with B.A. degrees in German and Music. He later completed two master's degrees at WFU: the first in Southern Studies (1973) and the second in U.S. History (1980). In 1983 he became a Lecturer in Education at the university. He compiled bibliographies of Ammons, Donald Davie, Dickey, Eberhart, Garrett, William Goyen, Randall Jarrell, Andrew Lytle, Walker Percy, Price and Peter Taylor, as well as checklists of the writings of Henry Taylor, Robert Morgan and Charles Wright. Wright edited The Conference Letters of Benjamin H. Freeman and The Recollections of A. D. Reynolds. He translated Colonel Heros von Borcke's Journal, 26 April - 8 October 1862, and he and F. D. Bridgewater translated The Great Cavalry Battle of Brandy Station by Heros von Borcke and Justus Scheibert (both published by Palaemon Press). Wright was a member of the Grolier Club from 1980 to 1998. He currently lives in England.
In 1992, Wright donated his personal library of Palaemon Press imprints to Duke University. These copies joined many Palaemon Press works acquired for the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library's Southern literary collections. These collections include the papers of Chappell, Garrett, Price, and Styron and the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (also donated by Wright). The Rubenstein Library holds one of the largest collections of Palaemon Press imprints.
