The Natural Sciences & Engineering Collections Coordinator and Research Librarian creates and implements high-level collecting strategies for the Natural Sciences & Engineering department in collaboration with department members and the Head of Collection Strategy and Development.  They lead efforts to evaluate and promote collections across multiple formats. They work with library colleagues to provide exceptional research support for students, staff, and faculty across the STEM disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with Natural Sciences & Engineering librarians, coordinates department-level collections decision-making, collections analysis, and relevant team projects; fosters collaboration among subject librarians and Collections Services colleagues
  • Represents Natural Sciences & Engineering in decision-making groups related to collections and other relevant committees
  • Develops and manages library collections in relevant disciplines with a focus on diversity of formats and perspectives
  • Promotes collections and resources to library colleagues and Duke researchers
  • Uses data and assessment techniques to support evidence-based changes to services, programs, and user experience
  • Provides in-depth, specialized research consultation for students, faculty, and visiting scholars in the STEM fields
  • Provides guidance on evidence synthesis/systematic literature reviews performed by Duke students, faculty, and staff
  • Monitors trends in scholarly publishing to inform outreach, programming, and library collections and services
  • Participates in division-wide collective responsibilities, including chat reference
  • Contributes to other departmental and library goals and initiatives as needed. Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Participates in professional organizations, and serves the library, University, or community through committee work or other professional capacities

Qualifications

Education:

Required:  Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and experience.

Preferred: BA/BS degree in science discipline or equivalent academic training.

Experience

Required:

  • Evidence of commitment to diversity and the ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Three or more years of experience supporting science researchers and students in an academic, research, or special library
  • Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member
  • Aptitude and interest in learning new tools and skills to support modern research methods
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Commitment to high-quality user experience

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience applying evidence synthesis and/or systematic review methodologies within an academic discipline
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in developing, assessing, and managing collections
  • Experience supporting researchers in STEM fields, especially engineering and/or the physical sciences

Working Conditions

  • Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible
  • Occasionally positions self to reach high and low shelves
  • Normal office environment
  • Occasional weekend and/or evening shifts required.

Salary and Benefits

Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated salary is $63,500-$82,400. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
