The Global GIS DVD was released as a product of the USGS and the American Geological Institute and contains a wealth of USGS and other public domain data —  including global coverages of elevation, land cover, seismicity and resources of minerals and energy at a nominal scale of 1:1 million.  There are 81 layers or data tables.

Most of the layers are vector layers, mostly as Esri shapefiles, but there is one group of raster files.  The formats vary. The broad groupings are as follows, and if you go to the collection in our Repository change to "Sort by title" to sort the layers by these categories.

  • Economic Structures
  • Environment
  • Gazetteers
  • Imagery
  • Land
  • Political
  • Rasters
  • Reference
  • Transportation
  • Utilities

Some of the layers include metadata, which can be distinguished in the layer's list of downloadable files as the one tagged as "text/html."
