Loan Periods

Loan periods vary as determined by Duke borrower status: 

Undergraduate Student

  • 1 week for DVD/VHS titles with a one-time 1 week online renewal
  • 3 hours for reserve and limited circulation materials (building use only)
  • Limit of 6 DVD/VHS titles
  • After a DVD/VHS title has been returned there is a 24-hour waiting period before it can be checked out again

Graduate Student

  • 1 week for DVD/VHS titles with a one-time 1 week online renewal
  • 3 hours for reserve and limited circulation materials (building use only)
  • Limit of 6 DVD/VHS titles at one time
  • Extended privileges are available; contact the Librarian for Cinematic Arts for assistance.
  • After a DVD/VHS title has been returned there is a 24-hour waiting period before it can be checked out again

Faculty

  • 1 week for DVD/VHS titles with a one-time 1 week online renewal
  • Reserve material may be checked out for classroom showings; please use this form.
  • Limit of 6 DVD/VHS titles 
  • Extended privileges are available; contact the Librarian for Cinematic Arts for assistance.
  • After a DVD/VHS title is returned there is a 24-hour waiting period before it can be checked out again

Staff

  • 1 week for DVD/VHS titles with a one-time 1 week online renewal
  • 3 hours for reserve and yellow-box materials (building use only)
  • Limit of 6 DVD/VHS titles at one time
  • After a DVD/VHS title has been returned there is a 24-hour waiting period before it can be checked out again

Outside Borrowers

  • All video titles must be requested, 24 hours in advance, for in-building viewing/use only.
    Submit requests here
  • Viewing stations and headphones are available at the Music Library, for your use, in exchange for a photo ID

Returns and Fines

Video Returns

  • Return videos/DVDs to any Duke Libraries Service Desk
  • To limit damage do not return videos in campus mail

Fines

  • $5.00 per day per title
  • Damaged or lost videos will result in a non-refundable $25 processing fee, late fee and replacement fee (replacement fee is determined on a title-by-title basis)

Reserves and Limited Circulation

Reserve Videos

  • For faculty who assign their students films to watch outside of class it is strongly recommended to place titles on reserve
    Contact the Lilly Media and Reserves Coordinator for assistance.
  • Reserve videos do not circulate outside the building, except by special arrangement using our classroom showing request form and after approval from faculty for whom a title has been placed on reserve
  • Reserve videos are checked out to patrons for 3 hours and viewed in the library.

Limited Circulation Videos

  • Video/DVDs that are frequently used in classes, out-of-print or cost over $200 may be designated as Limited Circulation
  • Limited circulation videos may be viewed in the building and circulate outside the building by special arrangement using our classroom showing request form
  • Videos in yellow boxes have limited circulation status; most users can check them out for 3 hours to view inside the library

Summer Program Participants

 American Dance Festival

  • ADF students may view VHS/DVD titles for 3 hours inside the library; MFA students have faculty borrowing privileges
  • ADF faculty have standard faculty and staff borrowing times and restrictions (see above)
