Print Resources
One method of finding print resources about Spanish film is to browse the online catalog. Follow these steps to browse:
- Open the Duke Library Catalog, and chose Advanced Search at the top of your screen.
- Click on the "Browse an Alphabetical List" link on the left side of the screen.
- On the "Select index to browse" pull down menu, choose "Subject (All)"
- Enter one of these subject headings to begin browsing books:

* Motion pictures - Spain - History
* Motion pictures - Spain - reviews
Another method is to browse the physical collection of books about Spanish film at Lilly Library.

Spanish Cinema: A Student’s Guide – Barry Jordan and Mark Allison (2005) PN 1993.5 S7
A good introduction to the subject. The authors provide a history of Spanish film, along with a discussion of film techniques, genres, and stars that are representative of the cinema of Spain.
Spanish Popular Cinema – Antonio Lázaro Reboll and Andrew Willis (2004) PN1993.5 S7 S73 2004
A collection of essays on Spanish popular film, including such topics as historic epics and musicals during the early Franco era, child actress Marisol, Amenábar’s Abre los ojos, and the representation of the Spanish Civil War.
Spanish National Cinema – Núria Triana-Toribio (2003) PN1993.5 S7 T753 2003
The history of Spanish film from 1896 through the late 1990’s and early 2000. Focuses on film as representative of Spain’s national identity and the concept of “Spanishness”.
Spanish Cinema - Rob Stone (2002) PN1993.5 S7 S76 2002
A chronological discussion of Spanish film, from early Spanish cinema to the stars of today, including Banderas, Abril, Bardem and Cruz. The author devotes a chapter each to the films of Carlos Saura and Julio Medem
Historia illustrada del Cine Español - Emilio C. García Fernández (1985) PN1993.5 S7 G34 1984
An illustrated history of Spanish cinema, from the late 1800’s through the early 1980’s. The history is divided into chapters about specific films, directors, actors and themes, and each is illustrated by photos, publicity stills and movie posters. Although the text is in Spanish, the illustrations would be an excellent resource for non-Spanish-speakers.
