Agency and Organizational Records

Outdoor Advertising Association of America (OAAA) Archives, 1885 – 1990s
The OAAA archives document the operations and activities of the OAAA, the primary professional organization throughout the modern history of the industry in the United States.  The collection includes correspondence, directories, published materials, membership records, articles and clippings, and much more.  Portions of the collection have been digitized.

R.C. Maxwell Company Records, 1891 – 2001 and undated
Founded in 1894 by Robert Chester Maxwell (1873-1955), the R.C. Maxwell Co. of Trenton, NJ was one of the earliest enduring outdoor advertising companies.  The R.C. Maxwell records include photographs and negatives, ledgers and account books, scrapbooks, correspondence, and legal paper.  Portions of the collection have been digitized.

War Effort Mobilization Campaign Poster Collection, 1942 – 1945
Collection contains miniature reproductions of billboards designed by the War Advertising Council that advertise various government campaigns during WWII including war bonds, civilian employment, women’s Naval Reserve (WAVES), food rationing and civil defense.

C&U Poster Advertising Company Records, 1896 – 2004 and undated
Collection documents the operations of C&U Poster founded in 1912 in Urbana-Champagne, Illinois, and includes photographic material, correspondence, administrative and financial records, research reports, and legal material including court proceedings and rulings, depositions, and zoning ordinances.

Professional Papers

John F. Hogan Papers, 1928 – 1992
The Hogan papers consists of photographs, contracts, scrapbooks and images of transit station posters and car cards that document his career placing advertising within the bus, subway, and rail systems in the northeast United States. 

Garrett Orr Papers, 1890s – 1994
Garrett Orr began his career as a graphic artist and went on to become the Art Director Outdoor Advertising International (OAI) and the President of the Art Directors Club of New York.  The collection documents his artistic output and includes drawings, watercolors, and paintings produced for outdoor advertising campaigns for Lucky Strike, Del Monte, Gillette, Mazola, and many more.

Wallace Elton Papers, 1909-1990
Wallace Elton was an executive for the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT).  His papers include documents pertaining to outdoor advertising campaigns for the JWT.  Most prominently featured are scrapbooks and information regarding Ford Motor Company’s outdoor advertising campaigns through JWT.

John Paver Papers, 1920-1979
Paver worked as a research engineer for Dr. Miller McClintock in helping him create the Traffic Audit Bureau (TAB).  Paver was instrumental in the establishment of standards for traffic measurement and, later, standards concerning the quality of billboards.  Collection contains writings and speeches, photographs, research materials, and subject files.
